UK glass industry trade association British Glass Manufacturers' Confederation has been nominated as the successful organization to bid for funding from Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) through its growth deal.

Around £320m cash boost has been secured by the local leaders from the public and private sector for Sheffield City region, which is expected to create about 28,000 jobs as well as training for 40,000 people.

The cash will be used to support more than £600 worth infrastructure projects in the region, while creating £130m Skills Bank, which will offer training for 40,000 people.

British Glass and The Glass Academy CEO Dave Dalton said, "This is fantastic news for the city of Sheffield and for us as the trade association representing the UK glass industry."

Sheffield City region LEP chairman James Newman said the region is getting a bigger share of the new funds than expected.

"We have secured the fifth largest amount of any LEP area and we are one of a very small handful of LEPs being given significant freedoms by Government as to how we spend our funding," Newman added.

The creation of the British Glass Academy as a center of excellence and hub of glass training in the UK will be based in Sheffield.

The Government is investing in the skills base, up-skilling the workforce and promoting research and development, and supporting the resurgence of the UK glass industry simultaneously.
